Working from home at Il Foglio
All possible thanks to GMDE
The editor-in-chief of Il Foglio Claudio Cerasa recounted - as part of a long reflection on the development of working 'from home' in recent years - what he is learning from the condition of his editorial staff in recent weeks, who find themselves working without a shared physical space, for passing reasons.
"For the past month, our newspaper has been without a physical location in Rome where the paper is processed. Il Foglio is changing location, we will soon have a new office, but while waiting to settle in a new building, the work is not yet finished, we have found ourselves working like in a pandemic: all from home. In doing so, however, we discovered that, unlike spring 2020, we were unintentionally prepared. For three years now, our morning meetings, which are usually convened around 11.45 a.m., have been conducted on Skype, even when we are all in the editorial office: it is more comfortable, it is more flexible, it is safer, we are still a little afraid of sudden sneezes, and after all, over these years, we have learnt to confront each other well, and even to argue if necessary, even without all sitting in the same room. For a few years now, then, our operating system, GMDE, has allowed us to work remotely easily: all you need is a computer, a decent internet connection and you can pass the newspaper from anywhere in the world. Finally, for the last three years, a large part of our communication has been moving during the day via chats on WhatsApp, where information, reports, ideas, and additional insights from the day travel in addition to the ideas presented in the morning meeting."
